CARPAL TUNNEL
What is it?
As people use their hands more and more doing the same repetitive motion, such as typing or being a hairdresser, carpal tunnel can develop. This condition can be described as having your hands fall asleep, tingling and numbness, or lightning bolts radiating into your hands and fingers. Often times this condition has been misdiagnosed due to the fact that radiating pain from your neck can cause the same symptoms as carpal tunnel.
Causes
- Repetitive movement
- Injury to the wrist that causes swelling
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Diabetic Neuropathy
- Repetitive use of vibrating hand tools
- Mechanical problems with the wrist joint
- Work stress
- Water retention due to pregnancy and/or menopause
Symptoms
- Pain in wrist, hand, and/or fingers
- Itching of the palm
- Difficulty with grip
- Waking up at night because of a strange feeling in the hand
- Experiencing a feeling of hand or finger swelling when no swelling is visible
- Difficulty making a fist
- Tingling, burning, numbness in the fingers (especially thumb, middle and index fingers)
- Dropping things because you are no able to firmly grasp objects
Treatment
Our goal is to alleviate your pain by treating the source of the pain. There are several therapies we use to decrease pain and restore function.
- Thermal Imaging- is used to detect and document the severity of the inflammation or lack of blood flow. It will pinpoint whether your symptoms are caused by problems with the neck or if is truly carpal tunnel. The will allow us to treat the source of the problem. [Read More]
- Decompression Therapy- uses gentle traction to stretch the involved areas and reduce the pressure on the median nerve. [Read More]
- Laser Therapy- is the application of low level laser to reduce inflammation and restore proper blood flow. The laser emits a focused, powerful wave of safe infrared light that penetrates the skin tissue and surrounding nerves to help promote healing. It is painless, non-invasive, non-toxic, applied without drugs and very safe. [Read More]
- Low Force Manipulation- is used to gently correct any misalignments that may be contributing to the condition. This type of manipulation allows the bones in the hand to be aligned to allow proper function of the median nerve.
