SCIATICA

Conditions We Treat- Sciatica

What is it?

Sciatica is a condition which can cause radiating pain from your low back down either leg.  It can cause numbness, tingling sensations or even pain down your legs.  Sciatica comes from lower back pinched nerves.  Sciatica can result from bending and twisting while lifting heavy objects.

Causes

  • The most common cause is a herniated disc in the lumbar spine (lower back) that puts pressure on the sciatic nerve or a nerve root. A herniated disc can occur suddenly and cause acute pain or it may develop gradually.
  • Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spaces in the spinal column that causes compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots. It can cause sciatica if it occurs in the lower back.
  • In advanced osteoarthritis of the spine, bits of cartilage may break off and float around inside the spinal joints. This causes irritation and inflammation and if it occurs in the lower back may put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Spondylolisthesis, when one vertebra slips over another, occurs most often in the lower back where the misaligned vertebrae may place pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Something as simple as muscle strain can cause inflammation, which may put pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms

  • Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg.
  • Numbness or muscle weakness along the nerve pathway in your leg or foot. In some cases, you may have pain in one part of your leg and numbness in another.
  • Tingling or a pins-and-needles feeling, most commonly in your toes or part of your foot.

Our Treatment

  • Ultra sound, Electrical stimulation, and Massage- are used to reduce the inflammation in the area of the low back where the sciatic nerve originates.
  • Arthrostim Manipulator- produces 12 mini-adjustments to put misplaced vertebrae back in place. [Read More]
  • Cox Flexion/Distraction Technique- stretches one disc at a time, to achieve the maximum benefit of truly stretching the disc that needs to be opened.  This is the only technique with proven results in relieving sciatica. [Read More]
  • Rehabilitation Machines (such as the Spine Force)- a computerized, virtual physical trainer which strengthens the muscles of the spine, so re-injuries are less likely to occur and you will have the benefit of being pain free much longer. [Read More]
